Coming off a bye, the UCF Knights forgot there was a game going on as the Baylor Bears committed a mauling in a 30-3 blowout. It’s time for some Knee-Jerk Reactions.
Offensive Regression
With the bye week, it was expected to see the offense come out with some fire. That did not happen. In the first half, the Knights struggled with 125 total yards of offense and went 0/5 on third down. Quarterback Tayven Jackson went 11/20 for 84 yards. UCF’s saving grace was Baylor playing undisciplined football, which resulted in 60 penalty yards.
The second half didn’t get much better. The offense had its typical roadkill-mimicking third quarter as the Knights generated a whopping 27 yards of offense. The fourth quarter traded in one form of offensive ineptitude for another as Jackson threw a pair of interceptions. The first was returned to the UCF seven-yard line. The second pick was thrown into double coverage. Ultimately, Jackson looked like a backup quarterback. He connected with only six receivers and struggled with his accuracy.
With the use of backup offensive lineman Connor Meadows as an extra tight end, the playcalling that utilized him as a receiver makes it seem it wasn’t just the players who played poorly. Add that to a complete disregard for Baylor’s weakness in their run defense for a good portion of the game, and you get the worst scoreboard output by the Knights since 2015. Head coach Scott Frost and company whiffed here.

Sleeping Through the Bye Week
The UCF defense had its worst single-half showing of the season. The energy was not there. The defensive backs looked flat in their coverage, and Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson was able to pick them apart, scoring on all four of their possessions. This is uncharacteristic of the defense this season. It’s like someone spiked the Gatorade or something. Robertson was nearly perfect in the first half, finishing 23/30 for 247 yards and two touchdowns. His last two plays in the first half were a sack by Malachi Lawrence and then a strip-sack by Lawrence that Derrick LeBlanc recovered to set up a 45-yard field goal by Noe Ruelas as time expired. Going into halftime, fans had to wonder if this was a blip or a shift in momentum. Fans recall the collapse in 2023, when UCF had a 28-7 halftime lead but ultimately lost 36-35.
Spoiler: It was a blip. The defense tightened up in the second half, but they were betrayed by offensive ineptitude. Baylor was able to find the endzone on a seven-yard drive following a Jackson interception, but the Knights’ defense did their job the rest of the way, with the Bears only accruing 111 yards of total offense, and only 20 passing yards in the second half. Unfortunately, the disastrous first half did enough damage that the second half became a moral victory.

What Now?
UCF is now 4-4 with four games left. The Knights will have to secure two wins to qualify for a bowl game. Their next opportunity for a win will be the Space Game this coming Friday against Houston, which is coming off a loss to West Virginia. Strange things happen at the Space Game, and the Knights are a different team at home versus on the road. However, the team must shake off the loss to Baylor. UCF also has a home game against Oklahoma State, which they must win.
Uniform Review
UCF opted for a traditional road uniform, featuring white helmets with the standard block UCF logo, white tops, and black bottoms. It’s not a bad look, but it’s a safe look. UCF’s road selection isn’t huge, but the white helmet works. This was Baylor’s homecoming, and they wore a retro all-green outfit.

Game Notes:
- Baylor leads the series 2-1.
- This is the first time since 2015(South Florida) that UCF went the entire game without scoring a touchdown. It also matches the lowest output(2009 Texas) UCF has had since being shut out against UAB in 2008.
- UCF has a seven-game road losing streak. UCF has not won a game on the road since September 14, 2024, against TCU.
- Sorry, it’s not my best, but I never came back from the bye week.
