Can UCF’s Defense Carry Them in Year One of the Big 12?

The UCF defense depth chart has been released, and it gives a very different impression than many expected heading into the season. With the opener against Jacksonville State approaching, the lineup shows a defense built on transfers, veteran leadership, and playmakers.

Linebackers Leading the Way

At the center of the defense stands Keli Lawson, a redshirt senior who transferred from Virginia Tech and quickly earned recognition with an 80-tackle season in 2023. Alongside him is Lewis Carter, a junior from Oklahoma who plays with speed and strong instincts. Together, they provide size, intelligence, and stability. Depth players such as Jayden McDonald and TJ Bullard add necessary rotational strength. This linebacker corps looks positioned to be the anchor of the unit, bringing both leadership and production.

Interior Dominance on the Line

The defensive line boasts a wealth of size and power. Malachi Lawrence and Nyjalik Kelly provide veteran presence on the edge, with Kelly coming off a strong 2024 season that included double-digit tackles for loss and multiple forced fumbles. The interior features RJ Jackson, a transfer who brings bulk to the middle, and Horace Lockett, a developing talent pushing for playing time. Fresh legs and rotation will be key, and Alex Grinch’s scheme relies on waves of defensive linemen to pressure quarterbacks and hold the line against the run.

Secondary and Takeaway Potential

The secondary combines length, speed, and ball skills. Nickelback Braeden Marshall is back in form and expected to play a major role in forcing turnovers. Antione Jackson and Jayden Williams give the defense strength at corner and safety, with Williams arriving as a proven transfer from FAU. Demari Henderson adds even more playmaking ability after producing three interceptions, three fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles in 2023. The depth chart showcases a defensive backfield that can rotate talent without sacrificing production. This rotation will be crucial in the fast-paced Big 12.

Special teams also stand out. Return specialist Jaden Nixon has drawn praise throughout camp, and his presence could finally spark the return game. Kicker Noe Ruelas brings consistency with a career conversion rate near 78 percent and range out to 54 yards. In conference play, where close games often come down to a single possession, reliable special teams can determine the outcome.

The UCF defense depth chart is more than just a list of names; it reflects an identity built on physicality, depth, and opportunistic play. Transfers, established leaders like Lawson and Marshall, and impact defenders such as Kelly and Williams give this roster the tools to compete. With discipline and execution, this defense could emerge as one of the most surprising units in the Big 12 this season.
