Scott Frost’s Development Plan and UCF’s Quarterback Competition

In the current Big 12 landscape, success depends as much on player development as it does on recruiting stars. Scott Frost is approaching his first full cycle at UCF with an understanding that roster building has changed dramatically in the transfer portal era. With significant roster turnover, he must turn a roster full of new faces into a cohesive, competitive team — and quickly.

Frost has emphasized honesty and clear development paths in recruiting. Quarterback commit Dante Carr praised the coaching staff for outlining exactly what it would take for him to succeed, rather than selling unrealistic promises. This approach reflects Frost’s belief that undervalued recruits, if developed well, can play at a high level, sometimes outperforming higher-rated peers.

Development vs. Stars

Star ratings are often misleading. They can change based on where a recruit commits, and history is full of highly rated players who never panned out. UCF’s past success includes examples like Blake Bortles, a former three-star who became an NFL draft pick. Frost is focused on finding those “diamonds in the rough” who fit his system, have strong character, and can grow into impact players.

In today’s “mercenary” environment, where players frequently transfer in search of better NIL deals or opportunities, retention is as valuable as acquisition. Frost aims to use resources to keep key players in the program, building a long-term pipeline rather than relying solely on quick fixes from the portal.

QB Battle Defines Fall Camp

One of the most closely watched storylines in UCF’s fall camp is the quarterback competition among Cam Fancher, Jacurri Brown, and Taven Jackson. Each brings a different style — Fancher with dual-threat experience, Brown with athleticism, and Jackson as a more traditional passer.

Frost has made it clear he doesn’t want to hand the job to anyone. Instead, he’s letting competition run deep into camp, even hinting the decision could stretch into Game One. While this keeps the battle intense, it also risks delaying the offense’s identity formation. Still, in a league where UCF will face multiple close games, having the right quarterback is critical for late-game execution.

Running Back Depth a Strength

The backfield battle between Miles Montgomery and Jaden Nixon highlights UCF’s depth. Both backs made the Doak Walker Award watch list, signaling national recognition. Nixon’s explosive ability and past production give him an edge, but Montgomery’s leadership, loyalty to the program, and versatility make him invaluable.

In today’s game, a two-back system isn’t optional — it’s necessary. Frost will likely split carries, keeping both backs fresh for fourth-quarter situations where controlling the clock can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

The Long View

Building a program in the Big 12 still requires patience. Frost is piecing together a roster that can compete now while setting the foundation for sustained success. His strategy blends selective use of the portal, targeted high school recruiting, and an emphasis on development and retention.

If UCF can execute that vision, they’ll close the gap with the conference’s top programs and establish themselves as a consistent contender.
